The story

The Story of the Shapes You Can Hold

I am the shape of the bouncy ball you play with, and the orange you eat for a snack. I am the shape of the gift box that holds a surprise, and the ice cubes that cool your drink. I am the shape of the pointy party hat you wear, and the delicious ice cream cone you love. I am the shape of the can of soup your family cooks, and the tall cup you drink from. Have you guessed who we are. We are the shapes you can hold in your hands. We are not flat like a drawing in a book. We are big and solid and real. We are 3D Shapes.

For a long, long time, we were just part of the world. People saw us everywhere, even before they gave us our special names. They saw me, the Sphere, when they looked up at the bright sun or the glowing moon. They saw me, the Cone, in the tall mountains that reached for the sky. They found me, the Cube, in sparkly, perfect crystals hidden in the earth. Thousands of years ago, around 3000 BCE, people in a place called ancient Egypt thought we were very useful. They needed a way to build amazing things, so they used us to create the giant pyramids. Those pyramids are made of huge blocky shapes that fit together perfectly, and they still stand tall today. A little later, in a place called ancient Greece, some very smart thinkers wanted to understand us better. One of them was a man named Euclid. Around 300 BCE, he wrote a super famous book called 'Elements'. In his book, he gave us all our official names, like Cube, Sphere, and Cylinder, and he wrote down all the rules about how we work. He made us famous.

Another hero of ours also lived in ancient Greece. His name was Archimedes, and he lived in the 3rd century BCE. He was a brilliant scientist who loved to solve puzzles about the world, and he especially loved me, the Sphere. He thought I was the most perfect shape of all. He spent a lot of time studying me, rolling me around, and thinking about my round surface. He was the very first person in history to figure out exactly how to measure my outside and all the space inside me. It was a very tricky puzzle to solve. Archimedes was so proud of this discovery that he made a special request. He asked that when he was gone, a picture of a sphere and a cylinder would be carved on his tombstone to remember his favorite shapes forever.

Today, you can find us everywhere you look. We are the building blocks of your world. I am the Cube in your building blocks, the dice you roll in a game, and even the pixels that make up your favorite video games. I am the Sphere in your soccer balls, the planets in space, and the shiny marbles in your collection. I am the Cone that keeps cars safe on the road and holds a yummy scoop of ice cream. And I am the Cylinder in car engines, the batteries that power your toys, and the pipes that bring water to your house. From the tiniest toy to the biggest spaceship, you can find us helping you build, play, and dream. What will you create with us next.
