Or think about the library, where all the books have a special spot so you can find them. How does a mail carrier know exactly which house gets which letter. It might seem like magic, but it’s actually me. I am the secret set of rules and steps that helps everyone know what to do. Before I tell you my name, you should know that I am like a recipe for getting things done in a fair and orderly way. I help make sure things don’t get all mixed up. Hello. I'm the big idea that keeps things from getting messy. My name is Bureaucracy.

I am very, very old. My story started a long, long time ago in a place called ancient Mesopotamia, way back around 3500 BCE. People there needed a way to keep track of all their food and goods, so they wrote on special clay tablets. That was one of my very first jobs, helping them stay organized. Then, I traveled to ancient Egypt. Have you seen pictures of the giant pyramids. I was there, helping to build them. I kept records of all the workers, all the food they needed, and all the giant stones, making sure that huge project could get done. Thousands of years later, I went to Imperial China, starting around 221 BCE. I helped create a special system of tests. This way, the smartest and most hardworking people could get important jobs helping the emperor, which made things much more fair for everyone. For a long time, I didn't have an official name. Then, in the 18th century, a man in France named Jacques Claude Marie Vincent de Gournay finally gave me one. He called me 'Bureaucracy,' which means 'rule by desks,' because the people who did all this important organizing work usually sat at desks.

Today, you can find me working quietly all around you. I am in your school, helping make sure every student is registered for class. I am in hospitals, making sure doctors have the right information to help their patients get better. I am even at the post office, helping letters and packages travel all over the world to the right mailboxes. Now, I know that sometimes my rules can make things feel a little slow, like when you have to wait in a long line. But those rules are there for a very important reason. They make sure that everyone is treated the same and that everything is done correctly and safely. I am the quiet, helpful system that allows big communities of people to work together and build amazing things. I help make sure our world is safe, fair, and organized for everyone, one step at a time.
