The story

I Am Chemical Reactions

I make bread dough puff up and get fluffy in the oven. I make a campfire crackle and glow, turning a log into warm light. I even help fireflies light up their bottoms on a summer night. I am the secret fizz when you drop a tablet into water and the reason a shiny new bike gets reddish-brown rust spots if left in the rain. For a long, long time, people saw all the amazing things I could do, but they didn't know my name. They just saw me as a kind of magic. I am the power that changes one thing into something completely new. Hello. I’m Chemical Reactions.

For thousands and thousands of years, people have used me without knowing how I work. Way back in prehistoric times, early humans discovered how to use me to make fire around one million years ago. This changed everything, letting them cook their food and stay warm on cold nights. Later, in places like ancient Egypt and Greece, around 300 BCE, very curious people called alchemists started mixing and heating things just to see what would happen. They had some silly ideas, like trying to use me to turn cheap metals into shiny gold. They never succeeded, of course, but their experiments, which continued through the Middle Ages, were the very first steps toward understanding me. They were like detectives trying to figure out my secrets. They learned that mixing certain things together could create new colors, smells, and even little puffs of smoke.

The big breakthrough came in the late 1700s with a super-smart scientist named Antoine Lavoisier. He was like the master detective who finally solved the biggest puzzle about me. He did very careful experiments and realized something incredible. I don't make things disappear. When a log burns in a fire, it might look like it's vanishing, but Antoine proved that it just changes into ash, smoke, and gas. All the little bits are still there, just rearranged into new things. This discovery, made around the year 1789, was called the Law of Conservation of Mass, and it became the first big rule for how I work. From then on, people weren't just guessing anymore. They were becoming chemists who could predict what I would do.

Today, you can find me everywhere, helping you in ways you might not even notice. I'm working inside the batteries that power your toys and tablets. I'm the reason soap can grab sticky dirt and wash it off your hands. Scientists use me to create medicines that help people get well and to make new materials for building amazing things, like super strong plastics. I am always busy, rearranging the tiny building blocks of the world to create something new and wonderful. Every time you see something bubble, bake, burn, or change color, that’s me, Chemical Reactions, at work, making the world more interesting.
