The story

The Story of Day and Night

Sometimes I bring a big, bright light so you can play outside and see the butterflies. Then, I switch! I bring a soft, quiet dark with a sparkly moon and sleepy stars. I love to play peek-a-boo with the world, bringing brightness for your adventures and darkness for your dreams. It is my favorite game to play with you every single day. I am the rhythm of your world. I am Day and Night.

For a long, long time, people watched the sun travel across the sky and thought it was moving all by itself. But I have a special secret for you. The big, warm sun mostly stays in one place. It’s our big, round Earth that’s always spinning like a happy top. When your side of the Earth faces the sun, it’s daytime and time to play. When your side of the Earth spins away from the sun, it’s nighttime and time to rest. This spinning dance has been happening since the Earth was born, over four billion years ago, which is a very, very, very long time.

I give you sunny time for running and laughing, and cozy, dark time for snuggling and dreaming. I tell the birds when to sing their morning songs and the owls when to hoot their hello to the moon. Every time the sun comes back, it’s a brand new start for a new adventure. So when you see the morning light, get ready for a fun new day. And when the stars begin to twinkle, it’s time for sweet dreams.
