The Sparkly Feeling and the Solid Block

Have you ever noticed there are two kinds of things to say. One kind is like a solid, red block. You can show it to your friend and say, 'This block is red,' and they will see it, too. It is bright red for everyone. But another kind is like a sparkly feeling inside you. You might say, 'Red is the best color.' That's a happy feeling that belongs just to you. I am the special helper who shows you that both of these ideas are important, but they are different.

Hello there. I am the idea that helps you tell the difference between a Fact and an Opinion. A fact is like that red block—it’s something we can all see and know is true. It’s a fact that the sun is warm and that dogs bark. An opinion is your own special feeling, like thinking rainy days are cozy or that cats are the funniest animals. Long, long ago, around the 4th century BCE in a sunny place called Greece, very wise people started thinking about me. They wanted to understand what was true for everyone and what was a personal feeling, so they could learn about the world and share their ideas better.

Knowing about me is like having a superpower. Facts help you learn how the world works, like how a tiny seed grows into a big, tall sunflower. Opinions help you share what’s in your heart, like telling a friend your favorite ice cream flavor is chocolate. It’s wonderful when your friends have different opinions because it makes life interesting. I help you listen to your friends’ feelings and share your own, which is the best way to learn, play, and grow together.
