The story

A Dance Around the Sun

Imagine you are on a giant spinning top that is also zooming through space. You live on a big, beautiful ball called Earth, and it’s always dancing. In the middle of the dance floor is a giant, warm, glowing light—the Sun. I am the secret to this dance. Hello. My name is Heliocentrism, and I’m the big idea that the Sun is the star of the show, right in the very center.

For a very long time, people looked up at the sky and thought the Sun and stars were dancing around them. It looked like Earth was standing still. A long, long time ago, in the 3rd century BCE, a smart thinker named Aristarchus wondered if maybe Earth was the one moving. But it was not until much, much later, in the year 1543, that a sky-watcher named Nicolaus Copernicus shared this idea in a famous book. He said the Earth and its planet friends were all spinning in a big circle around the Sun. What a surprising thought.

At first, this idea was so new it was hard for people to believe. But soon, brave friends of the stars like Galileo Galilei used special looking glasses called telescopes to look closer at the sky. They saw that I was right. Because of me, we know we live on a wonderful planet that travels on a great adventure around our Sun. I help us understand our amazing home in the stars and remind us that there is always something new to discover when you look up with wonder.
