The story

The Story of the Polio Virus

Hello. You can't see me, but for a very long time, I was a secret, invisible troublemaker. I am a tiny virus. I used to travel quietly, especially in the warm summer months, and could make a person's muscles feel weak and wobbly. Sometimes, I made it so their legs couldn't walk or run anymore. People were very scared of me because they didn't know who I was or how to stop me. In fact, people knew about the trouble I caused way back in ancient Egypt, more than 3,000 years ago.

For centuries, I was a mystery. Then, people started to study me. In 1789, a kind doctor named Michael Underwood wrote down everything he saw when I visited children. Much later, in 1908, two very smart scientists named Karl Landsteiner and Erwin Popper looked through a microscope and finally discovered my true form: a virus. They gave me my official name, Poliomyelitis. Most people just call me Polio. Once they knew what I was, the race was on to figure out how to stop me from making people sick.

Many people worked together to fight me. A famous American president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, had gotten sick from me as a grown-up, so he helped raise money for scientists. This led to a huge breakthrough. On April 12th, 1955, a scientist named Dr. Jonas Salk announced he had created a vaccine. It was like a special training course for the body, teaching it how to fight me off so I couldn't cause any harm. A few years later, another scientist, Dr. Albert Sabin, created a different vaccine using drops you could swallow. These discoveries were a game-changer.

Because of these amazing vaccines, I can't cause trouble for most people anymore. Starting in 1988, countries all over the globe joined forces in a special group to protect every child from me. Today, I am almost completely gone from the world. My story isn't just about being a scary virus; it's about how clever and caring people can be. It shows that when we work together using science and helping one another, we can solve big problems and create a healthier, safer world for everyone to play in.
