The story

The Dancing Letters

I loop and swirl like a ribbon dancing in the wind. Sometimes I am tall and straight like a tree. Other times I am round and soft like a cloud. I am made of dark ink, but I look like a happy song you can see with your eyes. Do you know what I am? I am Arabic Calligraphy, the art of beautiful writing.

A very, very long time ago, around the 7th century, people wanted to write special words. Artists called calligraphers took little pens made from reeds and dipped them in ink. They carefully drew my lines on paper. Swish. Swoop. Dot. They made each letter look like it was dancing. They wanted the words to look as lovely as they felt in their hearts. This was how they showed love for their stories and songs.

I don’t just live in books. You can find me everywhere. I decorate the big, tall walls of beautiful buildings. I shine on colorful, smooth tiles. I am even carved into wood to make it pretty. Artists all over the world still love to draw my dancing shapes today. I show everyone that words are not just for reading. They can be beautiful art that makes everyone feel happy and connected.
