The story

The Book That Swam Under the Sea

Hello there. I am a whisper of ocean waves and a flicker of deep-sea light, all held between two covers. My pages are filled with words and pictures about a big, blue world waiting for you. I smell like old paper and fresh ink. I am a story about a grand adventure. I am the book, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas.

A man with a big imagination dreamed me up. His name was Jules Verne, and he lived in a place called France a long, long time ago. He loved science and adventure. He used his pen to write down all the wonders he could imagine hiding in the ocean. He worked for many months, from March 20th, 1869, to June 20th, 1870, to make my story perfect for you.

My story is about a brave man named Captain Nemo. He built a very special boat called the Nautilus that can swim deep, deep under the water, just like a fish. Inside my pages, you can ride along with him. We peek out of a big round window and see glowing fish, colorful coral castles, and a giant, gentle squid waving its arms hello. We find shiny treasure and see underwater volcanoes bubble. It’s a secret world that is so much fun to explore.

For more than 150 years, I have shared my secrets with children just like you. People read my words and dream of exploring the deep ocean. I show everyone that with a little imagination, you can go on the most amazing adventures without ever leaving your room. I am a story that reminds you to stay curious and wonder about the beautiful world all around you.
