The Story of the Pendulum Clock

Hello there. I am a pendulum clock. I am tall and have a friendly face with numbers on it. Inside me, I have a special part that swings back and forth, back and forth. It is called a pendulum. My very important job is to help everyone know what time it is. I make a gentle sound all day and all night. Tick-tock, tick-tock. It is a happy, steady sound. A long, long time ago, before I was born, it was very tricky for people to know the exact time. But I was created to help everyone.

My swinging secret came from a very smart man named Christiaan Huygens. He made me in a place called the Netherlands a long, long time ago, in the year 1656. Christiaan was a wonderful inventor, and he got a big idea from another clever man named Galileo. One day, Galileo was in a big building and saw a lamp swinging from the ceiling. Swish, swoosh, back and forth. He noticed that every single swing took the very same amount of time. That was a big discovery. Christiaan heard about this swinging secret and thought it was a brilliant idea for a clock. He knew a steady swing could help me tell the time perfectly.

And so, I was born. With my swinging pendulum, I could help people everywhere. My steady tick-tock told them when it was time to wake up and eat their breakfast. My moving hands showed them when it was time to go outside and play and when it was time to come inside for dinner. I helped them know when it was time to snuggle into bed for a story and go to sleep. I am a very old kind of clock now, but I am very proud. The idea of my swinging pendulum still helps other clocks tell time all over the world today.
