The story

The Story of the Saxophone

Hello there. I am a saxophone. I am shiny and gold and very curvy. Can you see all my little buttons? Those are my keys. When someone blows into my mouthpiece, I make a fun, wobbly sound. It goes 'Waaaah-wooo-weee!'. Before I was born, my maker wanted a new sound. He wanted a sound that was big and strong like a trumpet. But he also wanted it to be soft and smooth like a clarinet. So, he thought and thought and came up with me. I was a brand-new idea, made of shiny brass.

The man who made me was named Adolphe Sax. He was a very clever instrument maker who lived a long, long time ago, way back in the 1840s. He had a busy workshop filled with tools and parts of other instruments. He loved to build new things and was always tinkering. Adolphe had a big idea. He wanted to make an instrument that had never been heard before. He took a strong, shiny body made of brass, just like a trumpet. Then, he gave me a little wooden piece called a reed, which is like what a clarinet uses to make its soft sound. When air blows past my reed, it tickles and wiggles, and that's how I sing my special song. Adolphe worked very hard for a long time, polishing my brass and getting all my many keys just right. He wanted my voice to be perfect. He showed me to the world on June 28th, 1846. He was so proud of me.

The very first time I made a sound, it was magical. It was a warm, wonderful, wobbly sound. It filled the whole room and made everyone smile. I was so happy to have a voice. I soon joined the big family of musical instruments. I found a special home in a type of music called jazz. Jazz music is bouncy and fun, and my wobbly voice fits right in. I love making happy music. My favorite thing is to see people wiggle their toes, tap their feet, and dance all around when they hear my song. It makes me feel so joyful to share my music with everyone.
