Just want Kim Qui?
From the cool, quiet depths of the Eastern Sea, I have watched empires rise and fall for more years than there are stars in the sky. My shell carries the wisdom of the ages, and my heart holds the stories of a land and its people. My name is Kim Qui, the Golden Turtle, and for centuries, I have been a guardian to the people of the land you now call Vietnam. I remember a time, long ago, when a great and ambitious king needed my help to protect his kingdom from shadows both seen and unseen, a story of trust, ingenuity, and a powerful lesson that became the Legend of the Magic Crossbow. The king was named An Dương Vương, ruler of the Âu Lạc kingdom. He dreamed of building a magnificent fortress to protect his people, a citadel whose walls would spiral like a snail's shell. He called it Cổ Loa. But a strange problem plagued his builders. Every wall they raised during the day would mysteriously crumble to dust by morning. The king grew desperate, knowing his kingdom was vulnerable without its great defense. He traveled to the seashore and prayed for guidance, his voice full of worry. It was then that his plea reached me in my watery home, and I knew it was time for me to rise.
I emerged from the waves, my golden shell shimmering in the sun, and the king was startled but hopeful. I explained that the citadel's construction was being sabotaged by ancient spirits who were displeased with the disturbance. Together, the king and I faced these spirits, using wisdom and respect to appease them. With the path cleared, the workers of Âu Lạc built the Cổ Loa Citadel, its spiraling walls a masterpiece of design and a symbol of their perseverance. It stood strong and proud, a fortress unlike any other. My task was complete, and it was time for me to return to the sea. But before I left, I wanted to give the king a gift to ensure his kingdom's safety. I gave him one of my own golden claws, hard as diamond and filled with sacred energy. 'Have your cleverest craftsman use this as the trigger for a crossbow,' I told him. 'It will be a weapon of incredible power, able to defend your kingdom against any army.' The king did as I instructed, and the Nỏ Thần, or Magic Crossbow, was created. With a single pull of its trigger, it could unleash thousands of arrows, a storm of wood and steel that no enemy could withstand. Âu Lạc was safe, but I knew that such great power required even greater wisdom to wield.

For years, the kingdom prospered under the protection of the Magic Crossbow. When the ambitious northern ruler, Zhao Tuo, tried to invade, An Dương Vương defeated his army with ease. Frustrated, Zhao Tuo proposed a truce, offering his son, Trọng Thủy, to marry the king’s beloved daughter, Princess Mị Châu. An Dương Vương, hoping for lasting peace, agreed to the marriage. I watched from afar with a sense of unease. Trọng Thủy was charming and seemed devoted to the princess, but his true mission was one of deception. He slowly earned Mị Châu's complete trust, and one day, he asked her to show him the source of her father's power. The princess, blinded by love and suspecting nothing, led him to the chamber where the Nỏ Thần was kept. She proudly explained its secret—the magic trigger made from my claw. While she was distracted, Trọng Thủy carefully replaced my golden claw with an ordinary replica he had prepared. He then made an excuse to visit his home kingdom, promising to return soon. Before he left, he asked Mị Châu how he would find her if they were ever separated by war. She lovingly told him she would drop goose feathers from her cloak to mark her path for him. With the kingdom's greatest secret in his possession, Trọng Thủy returned to his father, and the stage was set for tragedy.
Soon after, Zhao Tuo’s armies attacked again. Confident in his magical weapon, An Dương Vương calmly went to the ramparts and fired the crossbow. But this time, only a single, useless arrow flew from the bow. The king stared in horror as he realized he had been betrayed. The enemy swarmed the citadel, and the king had no choice but to flee. He pulled Mị Châu onto his horse and galloped south, with the enemy in hot pursuit. Unaware of her role in the disaster, the princess remembered her promise to her husband and began pulling soft goose feathers from her cloak, leaving a trail for him to follow. The king rode until they reached the very edge of the sea, the waves crashing before them and the enemy army closing in behind. There was nowhere left to run. In his despair, he called out my name. I rose from the depths once more, but this time my message was grim. 'Your Majesty,' I said, my voice heavy with sorrow, 'the enemy is right behind you.' The king looked at me, then at the trail of white feathers leading directly to them, and finally at his daughter. The terrible truth dawned on him. Overcome with the grief of his kingdom's fall and his daughter's unwitting betrayal, he made a heartbreaking choice. After his daughter's fate was sealed, the heartbroken king walked into the sea with me, disappearing forever into my watery realm.
The story doesn't quite end there. Trọng Thủy, following the feather trail, found his beloved princess and was struck with unbearable remorse for what his ambition had cost. He, too, met a tragic end. The myth of the Magic Crossbow became a powerful lesson for the Vietnamese people, passed down from parents to children for generations. It is a story about more than just a magical weapon; it is a warning about vigilance, about the danger of trusting blindly, and about the duty to protect one's home and its secrets. Today, you can still visit the earthwork ruins of the Cổ Loa Citadel near Hanoi, a silent testament to this ancient story. The tale has inspired countless poems, plays, and works of art, embedding itself in the cultural heart of Vietnam. It reminds everyone that the greatest strength isn't found in a magic claw, but in wisdom, loyalty, and the courage to protect what you love. My story continues to echo through time, a timeless reminder that sparks imagination and encourages us to think about the delicate balance between trust and caution, love and duty.
