The story

The Legend of the Golden Turtle

My shell is as old as the mountains, and my eyes have seen empires rise and fall like the tide. I live in the deep, quiet waters of Vietnam, where secrets sleep in the mud and sunlight filters down like golden threads. I am Kim Qui, the Golden Turtle, and I am a guardian and a messenger for the great Dragon King of the waters, whose magnificent palace lies in the darkest depths. For thousands of years, I have watched the world of humans from below, a silent observer of their struggles and triumphs, only rising when my help is truly needed. I want to tell you about two times I rose from the water to help two great heroes, and how my story became part of the Legend of the Golden Turtle.

The first time was long, long ago, in the 3rd century BCE. A great king named An Dương Vương was trying to build a mighty fortress to protect his people from invaders. He called it Cổ Loa, the Spiral Citadel, because its walls were meant to wind around and around like a snail's shell, confusing any enemy. But every night, just as a section was completed, it would mysteriously crumble to dust by morning. The king was in despair. What good is a king who cannot even build a wall? He prayed for help, and I heard his call. I rose from the depths, my golden shell gleaming in the moonlight. "Do not fear, great king," I said. "Your work is being undone by evil spirits who linger here." I showed him how to find them and use his people's piety and strength to drive them away. Soon, the fortress stood tall and strong. To help him protect his kingdom forever, I gave him a special gift: one of my own golden claws. "Use this as the trigger for a magic crossbow," I instructed. This crossbow, called Nỏ Thần, could fire thousands of arrows at once. Can you imagine a weapon that powerful? For a long time, the king and his people were safe, all thanks to a little help from the sea.

Centuries passed like ripples on the water. The land was again in trouble, this time ruled by invaders from the Ming Dynasty who were cruel and unjust. A brave and kind man named Lê Lợi rose up to lead the people in a fight for freedom, but his army was small and poorly equipped. The Dragon King, my master, saw his noble heart and decided to help. He gave me a magical sword named Thuận Thiên, which means 'Heaven's Will,' and told me to deliver it to Lê Lợi. But a gift from the heavens cannot be given too easily; the hero must prove he is worthy. So, I devised a plan. I arranged for the blade of the sword to be caught in a fisherman’s net. The fisherman was surprised by its weight and shine but thought it was just a strange piece of metal. Later, Lê Lợi himself, while taking shelter from a battle, found the hilt of the sword glowing softly in a banyan tree. When he later visited the fisherman, the blade flew toward the hilt, and they joined together as one, shining with an incredible power. With Thuận Thiên in his hand, Lê Lợi was unbeatable. He drove the invaders out, freed his country, and became the great Emperor Lê Thái Tổ, starting a new era of peace.

Once peace was restored across the land, the sword's important job was done. One beautiful afternoon on January 1st, 1428, the emperor was boating on a peaceful green lake in the capital city, enjoying the freedom he had won for his people. I rose from the water once more, my ancient, golden head breaking the surface with a gentle splash. The emperor was not afraid; he seemed to be expecting me. "The war is over, and the land is at peace," I said in a voice that rumbled like distant waves. "I ask you to return the sacred sword to my master, the Dragon King." Lê Lợi understood that the sword was a gift for a time of need, not for him to keep forever. With great respect, he untied Thuận Thiên from his belt and held it out. The sword flew from his hands and into my mouth, and I swam down into the cool depths with the shining blade. To remember that amazing day, the people named the lake Hoàn Kiếm, which means 'The Lake of the Returned Sword.' If you visit the city of Hanoi today, you can see that very lake. In the middle of it stands a small tower called Tháp Rùa, or Turtle Tower, built to honor me. My story reminds people that great power comes with great responsibility, and true heroes know when it is time to let that power go. It is a legend that continues to inspire courage and reminds everyone that sometimes, help comes from the most magical of places.
