The story

The Mitten

My whiskers twitch, and my tiny nose is as cold as an icicle! My name is Squeaker, and I’m just a little field mouse trying to stay warm in this vast, snowy Ukrainian forest where the trees wear coats of white. One day, while burrowing through the snow, I found something amazing—a cozy, woolly house just my size, but I soon learned I wasn’t the only one who needed a warm place to rest in the story of The Mitten.

I never knew exactly how my wonderful new home came to be, but I imagine it started with a boy named Ivan. His grandmother, Baba, must have knitted him a beautiful pair of white mittens, as soft and warm as a sleeping lamb. While he gathered firewood, one mitten must have slipped from his hand, landing silently on a blanket of snow without him even noticing. That’s when I came along, shivering and desperate. Can you imagine my delight? The mitten looked like the coziest, safest home I had ever seen. I wriggled inside, curled up in a corner, and sighed a happy, warm sigh. It was perfect.

I wasn’t alone for long. Soon, a green frog came hopping through the snow, his little feet looking frozen. “Hoppity-hop! Who lives in this mitten?” he croaked. “I do, Squeaker the mouse. And who are you?” I replied. “I'm Hopper the frog. May I come in? My feet are freezing!” I thought about my cozy space, but he looked so miserable. “Alright,” I said, “but be careful not to stretch it.” A little while later, an owl with big, wise eyes swooped down. “Hoo-hoo! Who lives in this mitten?” she hooted. “We do, Squeaker the mouse and Hopper the frog. Who are you?” “I am Hoot the owl. May I come in? The wind is ruffling my feathers!” We agreed, and the owl fluttered inside, making the mitten bulge just a little bit more.

Our house was getting snug, but the forest was full of cold animals. Next came a swift rabbit named Thumper, his nose twitching nervously. He was followed by a sly fox named Russet, and even a great gray wolf named Shadow. Each one asked politely to come inside, and each time, we animals already in the mitten would look at each other, shrug, and make room. The mitten stretched and strained, groaning with the effort. It grew from the size of a boy's hand to the size of a loaf of bread, and then to the size of a big pumpkin. It was a squash and a squeeze, I can tell you. When a wild boar with sharp tusks asked to join us, we all shouted, “There's no more room!” But he was quite persistent and squeezed in anyway. I could hear the mitten’s seams creaking ominously.

Just when it seemed impossible for anything else to fit, a huge, lumbering bear ambled up. His shadow fell over us, and his voice was like thunder. “Grrrrumph! Who lives in this mitten?” he growled. We all trembled inside our woolly, stretched-out home. “We do!” we squeaked and hooted and grunted. “Well, move over! I need to warm my nose!” the bear roared. We protested, but the bear didn't listen and began to push his enormous body inside. The mitten stretched to an unbelievable size, its yarn pulled as thin as a spider's web. Just as the bear settled in, a tiny cricket, no bigger than an eyelash, hopped onto the mitten. “Is there room for me?” it chirped. Before we could answer, the cricket tickled the bear's nose. The bear’s eyes went wide, his whiskers trembled, and he let out a mighty “AH-CHOO!” The sneeze was so powerful that our mitten home exploded, sending all of us flying out into the snow in every direction.

As we all picked ourselves up from the soft snow, I saw the boy, Ivan, returning. He was looking for his lost mitten but found only a few strands of white yarn. He looked sad for a moment, then shrugged and went home where I’m sure his kind Baba knitted him a new pair. We animals all scurried back to our own homes, a little colder but much wiser. This story, “The Mitten,” or “Rukavychka” as it’s called in Ukrainian, teaches us about the joy of sharing, but also about knowing our limits. It shows how even the smallest space can be filled with friendship, and how a little bit of generosity can stretch a very long way, until a bear sneezes, of course.
