Just want Kenya Wildlife Service?
Hello! We are the Kenya Wildlife Service, but many people call us by our shorter name, KWS. We were created by the government of Kenya back in 1990 to do a very big and important job. Our mission is to protect all of the amazing wild animals across the country. We also take care of the special places where these animals live, from the wide, grassy savannas to the deep, green forests. This work helps keep Kenya’s nature beautiful and healthy for everyone.
One of our biggest responsibilities is managing Kenya's famous national parks and reserves. You can think of these parks as giant, safe homes built just for wildlife. In these protected areas, animals can find food, raise their families, and roam freely without many dangers. Working inside these parks are our brave wildlife rangers. Our rangers are like the police, but for animals. They patrol the parks every day, watching over incredible creatures like the tall giraffes, the powerful lions, and the gentle elephants. They work hard to make sure every animal is safe from harm.
Sometimes, even in a protected park, an animal needs extra help. A baby animal might lose its parents, or another might get sick or hurt. When that happens, our special rescue teams spring into action. We carefully bring the animal to a safe place where our veterinarians, who are animal doctors, can help it get better. A very serious part of our job is to stop people called poachers. Poachers are people who hunt animals illegally, which is against the law and harms wildlife. They especially try to hunt elephants and rhinos. Our rangers work day and night to stop poachers and protect these precious animals.

We know that for animals to be safe, the people who live near them must also be safe and happy. That’s why we work closely with communities that have homes and farms near the parks. We believe that people and animals can live together peacefully. Our teams visit local schools to talk with students about why wildlife is so important for Kenya. We teach them about conservation, which is the act of protecting nature. We also talk with the grown-ups in the villages to find solutions that keep both people and animals safe.
Today, we are still working hard every single day to protect Kenya’s wonderful wildlife. Our rangers continue to patrol the parks, and our vets continue to care for animals in need. We also spend time studying animals to learn more about how they live and what they need to survive. The more we learn, the better we can protect them. We do all this work so that children like you, and all the children who come after you, will always be able to see these amazing animals living happy and free in the wild.
