The story

A Panda's Promise: The Story of the World Wildlife Fund

Hello! We are the World Wildlife Fund, but you can call us WWF. You might have seen our logo, which shows a giant panda. We chose the panda because it is a special animal that people all over the world wanted to help save. Our story began on April 29th, 1961, in a country called Switzerland. A group of caring people, including Julian Huxley, Max Nicholson, and Peter Scott, were worried. They saw that many amazing animals and beautiful wild places were in danger of disappearing forever. They knew something had to be done. They created our organization with a very important purpose: to protect nature and find ways for people and wildlife to live together peacefully.

One of the most important parts of our job is helping endangered animals. An animal is endangered when there are not many of its kind left, which means it could vanish from the Earth completely. We work hard to save wonderful animals like tigers, elephants, rhinos, and sea turtles. To truly help them, we must also protect their habitats. A habitat is the special home where an animal finds food, water, and shelter. Forests are habitats for tigers, and oceans are habitats for sea turtles. We help create national parks and other protected areas. These places are safe havens where animals can live and raise their families without being harmed by threats like illegal hunting, which is also called poaching.

Protecting our entire planet is a huge job, and we know we cannot do it alone. That is why we work together with many different people all around the world. Teamwork is key to everything we do. We partner with scientists who help us learn more about animals and their homes. We also join with community leaders and governments in different countries to make good plans for protecting the environment. A big part of our work is helping local communities discover ways to live that are good for their families and also good for nature. We believe our world is healthiest and happiest when both people and wildlife can thrive together.

Today, our work continues in nearly 100 countries. Our mission to protect the planet is more important than ever because of big challenges that affect everyone. One challenge is climate change, which is making our world warmer. Another is pollution, which can make our air and water dirty. We also work to stop the loss of forests, since so many animals depend on them. We are always looking for new ideas and creative solutions to help our planet. We will keep working to protect amazing wildlife, save important habitats, and make sure Earth remains a beautiful home for everyone in the future.
