Just want Wampanoag people?
Hello! We are the Wampanoag people. Our special name means 'People of the First Light.' We have this name because our home is where you can see the sun rise first every morning. For a very, very long time, we have lived here, where the land meets the big ocean. Our home is a beautiful place with green forests and flowing rivers.
Long ago, we lived in special homes called wetus. A wetu is a cozy, round house. We built our wetus with strong wood from the forest trees. Then, we covered them with bark to keep our families warm and dry inside. Our wetus were comfortable places to live, eat, and sleep. We would gather inside to share food and be with our loved ones. It was a wonderful way to live close to the land.
Today, we live in modern houses, just like you might. But we are still here. We are still the Wampanoag people, living in our home by the ocean. We love to get together with our families. We tell our stories to our children, and we sing our songs. Being together makes us happy. We are proud to be the Wampanoag, the People of the First Light.
