The story

A Sparkly Ribbon in the Sand

I stretch like a long, sparkly ribbon through a sunny, sandy land. All day long, friendly animals come to say hello. Happy hippos splash in my cool water, and sleepy crocodiles rest on my warm banks. I love when they visit me. Do you know who I am. I am the Nile River, the longest river in all of Africa.

I am older than anyone can count. A long, long time ago, I made some very special friends. They were called the ancient Egyptians. Around the year 3100 BCE, they built their homes right next to me so we could always be together. I had a special secret that I shared with them every year. I would gently overflow my banks, like a bathtub filled too high, and leave behind dark, rich mud. This mud was a wonderful gift. It helped my friends grow lots of yummy food to eat, which made them strong and happy. I also helped them build their amazing pointy pyramids. They would float giant stones on big boats right on my back, and I would carry the stones to where they needed to go. I felt so proud to help.

I am still here today, flowing and helping people. Pretty boats with big white sails dance on my water, waving hello as they float by. Along my sides, beautiful green gardens grow, full of flowers and yummy vegetables. I love watching children play near my banks and seeing all the happy families. I am a river of life that connects people and places. I promise I will keep flowing with happy splashes forever and ever, sharing my gifts with everyone.
