The Rock That Holds the Stories
In a big, red land, under a giant blue sky, a huge, smooth rock is sleeping. When the sun wakes up, I glow with a bright orange light. It looks like I am smiling at the new day. When the sun gets sleepy and goes to bed, I change colors again. I turn a soft, sleepy purple. I have been here for a very, very long time, and my heart is full of secrets and stories from long ago. I am a giant stone reaching for the sky. I am Uluru.
I was made a long, long time ago, even before the big dinosaurs roamed the Earth. One day, my first friends came. They are the Anangu people, and they arrived more than 30,000 years ago. They are my guardians, and they take such good care of me. They know all my secrets. They painted beautiful stories right onto my rock walls. These paintings tell about a special creation time called Tjukurpa. The pictures are like a storybook that you can touch, showing stories of animals and the land.
I remember one very happy day. On October 26th, 1985, I was officially given back to my best friends, the Anangu people. Now, people from all over the world come to visit me. They walk around me and listen to the stories my guardians share. I love feeling their happy feet on the path around me. I am a place to learn and feel the magic of the land, and I love to share my ancient heart with everyone who visits.
