Wieliczka Salt Mine

Deep, deep under the ground, it is quiet and cool. The walls around me glitter and sparkle like a fairy's palace. If you were to lick my walls, they would taste salty, just like a pretzel. Do you know what I am? I am the Wieliczka Salt Mine. I live in a country called Poland, near a big city called Kraków. For a very, very long time, I have kept my salty treasures safe, waiting for people to come and explore my shiny tunnels.

A long, long time ago, back in the 13th century, people found me. They were like treasure hunters, but they were looking for salt. These people were called miners. The miners worked hard, digging pathways deep inside me. But they did something even more special. They were artists. With their tools, they carved wonderful things right out of my salty walls. They made sparkly statues of people and animals. They even carved a whole church deep inside me, called the Chapel of St. Kinga. Everything in it shines, from the floor to the pretty lights hanging from the ceiling, all made of salt.

The miners stopped digging for salt in the year 1996. But that was not my end. It was a new beginning. Now, I am a place for friends and families to visit. People come from all over the world to walk through my salty hallways. They look up at my sparkly ceilings and see the beautiful statues the miners made so long ago. I love hearing the happy sounds of children laughing in my tunnels. I am a special place that shows how people can create beautiful art in the most surprising places. I am here to remind you that there is magic and wonder hidden everywhere.
