The story

The Salt Mine That's a Secret City

Imagine a secret world hidden deep, deep under your feet. It is a place where the walls glitter and the air is cool and quiet. If you touched your tongue to the gray walls, they would taste salty, just like a pretzel. In this underground city, there are sparkling chandeliers that hang from the ceiling and giant halls that make your voice echo. It is a palace made of something you sprinkle on your food every day. I am the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland, and I have been here for a very long time.

My story began millions of years ago, when a huge, salty sea covered the land. When the water dried up, it left behind an amazing gift. It left me, a giant treasure of salt hidden underground. People call salt “white gold” because it was once very valuable. A famous story says that in the 13th century, a kind princess named Kinga threw her engagement ring into a salt mine in another country. Later, when miners started digging here in Poland, they found her ring inside a big lump of my salt. It was like magic. From that time on, miners began digging deep into my halls. In the 14th century, a wise king named Casimir the Great helped make the mining organized and important for the whole country.

For hundreds of years, brave miners worked inside me. They weren't just miners, though. They were also amazing artists. Starting in the 1600s, after their hard work was done for the day, they would take out their tools and begin to carve. They didn't carve wood or stone. they carved my salt walls. They carved statues of famous people, pictures from old stories, and even entire rooms. The most incredible place they created is the Chapel of St. Kinga. It is a huge church deep underground, and everything in it is made of salt. The chandeliers sparkle like they are made of a million diamonds, and the floor shines like polished marble. The miners made this beautiful place to pray and feel safe.

For centuries, my salt was used by people all over the world. But my job as a working mine came to an end. On June 30th, 1996, the last of the big digging machines was turned off. But that was not the end of my story. It was a new beginning. Even before that, on September 8th, 1978, I was chosen as one of the very first UNESCO World Heritage Sites, which means I am a treasure for the whole world to protect. Today, I am not filled with miners, but with visitors who come to see my wonders. I share my stories carved in salt and show everyone how people's hard work and creativity can make something truly magical.
