I was called Lilibet at home. My full name was Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor. I was born on 21 April 1926 at 17 Bruton Street in Mayfair, London. My parents were King George VI and my mother Elizabeth, later called the Queen Mother. I had a little sister named Princess Margaret. We grew up in busy royal houses and learned many duties early on.
A promise and a partnership
When I was young the world changed fast. I learned to drive during World War II. Also, I joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service in 1945 and fixed trucks. At 21 I made a promise on the radio. I said, “I declare before you all that my whole life, whether it be long or short, shall be devoted to your service.” That promise stayed with me for life.
