Moose

Hi there! My name is Moose, and I’m the biggest and tallest member of the whole deer family. I live in the cool, northern forests where there are lots of trees and yummy plants to eat. My name comes from an old word, 'mooswa,' which means 'twig eater.' That's a perfect name for me because I love munching on twigs. I especially love being near lakes and ponds, because—and this is a fun secret—I am an amazing swimmer.

The most famous thing about me is my giant antlers. They can grow to be as wide as a small car. They are like my special crown. Every year, around December, my heavy antlers fall off, which feels very strange. But don't worry. By the springtime, a new, fuzzy pair starts to grow right back. I also have a funny flap of skin that hangs under my chin. It’s called a dewlap, or a bell, and it wobbles when I walk. It's just another thing that makes me, me.

Most of the time, I like to wander through the forest by myself. My long legs are perfect for walking through deep snow in the winter. I spend my days searching for tasty food like willow branches, aspen bark, and delicious plants that grow on the bottom of ponds. To get those, I can stick my whole head underwater. My big nose is great for sniffing out predators like wolves or bears, and my strong legs can help me run away fast if I need to. When I have a baby, called a calf, they stay with me for a whole year so I can teach them everything about being a moose.

You might not know it, but I have a very important job. By eating so many twigs and shrubs, I act like a forest gardener. I trim the trees, which lets more sunlight reach the ground. This helps new, different kinds of plants grow, which makes a healthier home for birds, beavers, and all my other forest friends. I am proud to be a big, strong helper in my ecosystem, keeping the forest happy and healthy for everyone.
