The story

Aristarchus of Samos: The Star-Gazer

Hello! My name is Aristarchus. I lived a very, very long time ago in a beautiful place called Greece. My favorite thing to do was look up at the night sky. I would watch the Moon glow and see all the sparkly stars. I always wondered about them and had big questions about what they were and how they moved. The sky was like a giant storybook to me, and I wanted to read its secrets.

In my time, everyone believed that our Earth stood still while the big, bright Sun circled around us every day. They thought we were the center of everything! But as I watched the sky night after night, I had a different idea. I thought, 'What if we are the ones moving?' I imagined our Earth spinning and traveling on a big path around the giant Sun! I also used math to guess that the Sun was much, much bigger than our Earth. It was a funny idea to most people back then, and they did not think it could be true.

Not many people believed my big idea when I was alive. But that was okay because I loved thinking about the universe and all its wonders. I lived to be about 80 years old. Many, many years later, other scientists looked at the stars and realized I was right! The Earth really does travel around the Sun. It makes me happy to know that asking big questions can help us learn amazing new things about the world.
