The story

The Story of Aristarchus of Samos

Hello! My name is Aristarchus of Samos, and I want to tell you my story. I was born on a beautiful Greek island called Samos a very long time ago, around the year 310 BCE. Ever since I was a young boy, I loved to lie on my back at night and gaze up at the twinkling stars. The Moon and the Sun fascinated me, and I was full of questions about them. When I grew up, I decided to spend my life studying the sky. I became an astronomer, which is a special kind of scientist who studies the stars, the planets, and our amazing Sun.

In my time, almost everyone believed that the Earth was the center of everything. They thought the big Sun, the bright Moon, and all the tiny stars moved around us in perfect circles. But I was curious, and I used mathematics to study the sky very carefully. Around the year 270 BCE, I measured the Sun and the Moon and made a discovery that surprised me very much. I realized that the Sun was much, much bigger than our Earth! It was like comparing a giant ball to a tiny pebble. This gave me a brand new idea. I thought, 'Maybe the smaller thing moves around the bigger thing.' This led me to believe that our Earth was the one moving around the giant Sun, and not the other way around.

My new idea about a Sun-centered universe was so different from what everyone else believed. When I told people that the Earth was moving, they did not believe me. The thought of the ground moving right under their feet seemed silly and impossible to them. They were so used to thinking that the Earth stood still while everything else in the sky moved around it. I wrote down all of my ideas and calculations in a book, but sadly, that book was lost over time. Luckily, another famous thinker named Archimedes read my work and wrote about my ideas. Because of him, my discovery was not completely forgotten and managed to survive for others to read about later.

I lived to be about 80 years old and passed away around 230 BCE. My idea about the Sun being the center of everything was like a tiny seed that was planted in the ground. It took a very, very long time for that seed to grow. In fact, it took almost 2,000 years before another astronomer, named Nicolaus Copernicus, looked at the sky and proved that my idea was correct. Today, people remember me as one of the very first people to understand our real place among the stars, and that makes my life's work feel as bright as the Sun itself.
