Just want Evangelista Torricelli?
Hello! My name is Evangelista Torricelli. When I was a little boy growing up in a country called Italy a long, long time ago, I loved puzzles. I especially loved puzzles with numbers and shapes. I thought math was the most fun game in the world!
Because I loved learning so much, I got to meet a very famous and smart man named Galileo Galilei. He looked at the stars with a telescope! I was so excited to help him. I worked with him and learned so much about how the world works. It was my job to help him write down all his amazing ideas.
One day, I thought about a big puzzle. Why couldn't miners pump water very high up a hill? I had an idea. What if the air all around us was like a big, invisible blanket? What if it was heavy and pushing down on everything? I did an experiment in 1643 with a long glass tube and a special liquid metal called mercury. I proved that the air was pushing down! I had invented the very first barometer.
I lived to be 39 years old. My invention, the barometer, is still very important. It helps people know if the weather will be sunny or rainy. So next time you hear a weather forecast, you can think of me and my puzzle about the big, invisible blanket of air.
