Just want Homer?
Hello! My name is Homer, and I am a storyteller from ancient Greece. I lived a very, very long time ago, around the 8th century BCE. Back then, we didn't have printed books or TVs, so people would gather around to listen to poets like me tell exciting stories about brave heroes, powerful gods, and amazing adventures. Some people say that I was blind, which meant I couldn't see with my eyes. But that made me a wonderful listener, and I kept all my favorite stories right here in my memory.
One of my most famous stories is a long poem called the *Iliad*. It's all about the Trojan War, a huge battle between the Greeks and the city of Troy. My poem tells about the mightiest Greek warrior, a hero named Achilles. He was super strong and brave, but he also had a big argument with his king, which caused a lot of trouble for the Greek army. The war lasted for ten long years! It was a story full of action, brave soldiers, and a very clever trick involving a giant wooden horse to finally win the war.
After the Trojan War ended, one of the Greek heroes, a clever king named Odysseus, just wanted to go home to his family. But his trip took another ten years! I told all about his incredible journey in my other famous poem, the *Odyssey*. On his way home, Odysseus had to face a grumpy one-eyed giant called a Cyclops, escape a powerful sorceress who turned men into pigs, and sail past singing sea creatures called Sirens. It was one of the greatest adventure stories ever told.
I lived a long life, filling the world with stories. Even though I created my poems thousands of years ago, people loved them so much that they wrote them down so they would never be forgotten. Today, children and grown-ups all over the world still read the *Iliad* and the *Odyssey*. My heroes, like Achilles and Odysseus, live on in books, comics, and even movies, proving that a good story can last forever.
