The Invisible Rainbow

I am a vast family of energy, an enormous collection of waves, and most of my family members are completely invisible to your eyes. They are always around you, traveling silently through the air, through walls, and even through you. Have you ever wondered what secrets might be hiding in a simple sunbeam, waiting to be discovered. Hello, I am the Electromagnetic Spectrum. That might sound like a complicated name, but it’s just the title for my whole family of light and energy waves. The beautiful rainbow you know, with its red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, is just my visible light section. For centuries, humans knew me only as the light they could see and the heat they could feel. My true story with them, the story of discovering my full identity, began to unfold with a curious scientist named Isaac Newton. Around the year 1666, in a darkened room in England, he took a beam of sunlight and passed it through a triangular piece of glass called a prism. What emerged on the other side was me, split into my beautiful band of colors. He proved that white light wasn't one single thing, but a composite of all the colors you see in a rainbow. It was a revolutionary idea. For the first time, someone had revealed my hidden complexity. But even then, they had only managed to say hello to the most famous, most visible part of my family.

After Newton opened the door, it took over a century for people to find my invisible sides. In the year 1800, an astronomer named William Herschel was studying the colors of the rainbow, but he was interested in their temperature. He used a prism to create a spectrum and placed thermometers in each color. As he measured, he noticed the temperature increased from the violet to the red end. Out of pure curiosity, he placed a thermometer just past the edge of the red light, in a spot where there was no visible color at all. To his astonishment, that thermometer registered the highest temperature. He had discovered an invisible energy, a new part of my family he called 'calorific rays,' which you now know as infrared waves. Just one year later, in 1801, a German physicist named Johann Wilhelm Ritter was experimenting with silver chloride, a chemical that turned dark when exposed to light. He wanted to see which color worked fastest. He noticed it darkened most quickly in the violet light, but then he tried placing it in the dark area just beyond the violet. It turned dark even faster there. He had stumbled upon another invisible sibling, my ultraviolet (UV) waves. People were beginning to understand that I was much bigger and more mysterious than they had ever imagined.

For decades, my different parts—visible light, infrared, and ultraviolet—were seen as separate things. Then came a brilliant Scottish scientist named James Clerk Maxwell, who brought my whole family together. In the 1860s, he wasn't studying light directly. Instead, he was fascinated by two other invisible forces: electricity and magnetism. He immersed himself in complex mathematics, trying to describe how these forces behaved and interacted. Through his work, he made an incredible theoretical leap. He discovered that a changing electric field creates a magnetic field, and a changing magnetic field creates an electric field. This relationship created a self-sustaining wave that traveled at a very specific speed. When he calculated that speed, he was stunned. The speed of his theoretical wave was exactly the same as the measured speed of light. In his famous paper published in 1865, he proposed that light itself was an electromagnetic wave and that there must be a whole spectrum of these waves, far beyond what Herschel and Ritter had found. He had united my family with just the power of his mind and his equations.

Maxwell’s ideas were revolutionary, but they were just that—ideas on paper. He had predicted the existence of my other family members, but no one had proven they were real. That proof came in 1887 from a German physicist named Heinrich Hertz. In his laboratory, Hertz set up an experiment where he made electric sparks jump across a gap. Across the room, he had a simple loop of wire with another small gap. He was amazed to see that when the first device sparked, a tiny spark would jump across the gap in the second loop, even though they weren't connected. He had generated and detected invisible waves traveling through the air. These were my radio waves, just as Maxwell had predicted. They were much longer than infrared waves. Another monumental discovery happened by accident on November 8th, 1895. A physicist named Wilhelm Röntgen was working with a device called a cathode-ray tube in a dark room. He noticed a screen coated with a special chemical across the room began to glow. He was baffled. He put his hand in front of the tube and saw the bones of his own hand projected on the screen. He had found mysterious rays that could pass through soft tissue but not bone. He didn't know what they were, so he called them X-rays. My family was growing, and each new member gave humanity a new way of seeing the world.

Today, you don't have to be a famous scientist in a lab to meet my family. We are everywhere, and we are your everyday superpowers. My long-wavelength radio waves carry music to your car and bring the internet to you through Wi-Fi. My microwaves, a bit shorter, quickly heat up your leftovers. My infrared waves are what your television remote uses to change the channel. Then comes my tiny sliver of visible light, which allows your eyes to see these words and the world in all its glory. My ultraviolet waves from the sun help your body make vitamin D and give you a summer tan, but you need sunscreen because they can also be harmful. My powerful X-rays help doctors see inside you to check for broken bones or other problems. And my most energetic family members, gamma rays, are even used in medicine to carefully target and fight diseases like cancer. I am the silent, invisible force that connects your world, from sending a text to a friend to allowing astronomers to study the most distant galaxies.
