Hello there. You can’t see most of me, but I am all around you, all the time. I warm your face when you step into the sunshine. I carry your favorite songs through the air to the radio in your car. I am the beautiful colors of the rainbow that stretch across the sky after a rainstorm. I am even the invisible energy that cooks your popcorn in the microwave. I have many parts, like a big, invisible family. Some of my family members are long and lazy, stretching out like a sleepy cat. Others are tiny and energetic, zipping around faster than you can blink. For thousands of years, you only knew about one tiny piece of me—the pretty colors you could see with your eyes. You called it 'light.' But I was so much more, a huge family of energy waves hiding in plain sight. It took some very curious people a long, long time to discover all my secrets. Around the year 1666, a brilliant scientist named Isaac Newton played with a beam of sunlight and a piece of glass called a prism. In the year 1800, an astronomer named William Herschel was curious. He used a prism just like Newton, but he placed thermometers at the end of each color. Just one year later, in 1801, another scientist, Johann Wilhelm Ritter, found my other invisible neighbor. He knew that sunlight could turn a chemical called silver chloride dark. In the 1860s, he used math to figure out that electricity, magnetism, and light were all connected. He predicted that I was a huge family of waves, and that many more of my siblings were out there, waiting to be found. He was right. In 1887, Heinrich Hertz proved it by creating and detecting my longest waves—radio waves. Then, in 1895, Wilhelm Röntgen was working in his lab when he accidentally discovered mysterious rays that could pass right through his hand. He called them 'X-rays.' Finally, in 1900, Paul Villard found my most energetic, powerful family members of all: gamma rays. The whole family was finally together.
