The Invisible Rainbow
Hello! You can’t see most of me, but I am all around you. I am the warmth you feel from the sun on your skin. I am the invisible messenger that carries your favorite songs through the air to a radio. I am the special light that cooks your popcorn in the microwave and the rainbow of colors that lets you see a bright red ladybug. I can even be a superpower for doctors, letting them peek inside you to see your bones! You see, I am a giant family of energy waves, some super long and stretchy, others tiny and wiggly. People couldn't see my whole family at first, just a small part of it. Together, we are the Electromagnetic Spectrum, and I have a wonderful story to tell you about how my family was discovered.
For a very long time, people only knew about my most famous family members: the colors of the rainbow, which you call visible light. A scientist named Isaac Newton studied them back in the 1660s using a special piece of glass called a prism that could split sunlight into beautiful colors. But he didn't know that my family was much, much bigger! Then, in the year 1800, an astronomer named William Herschel was studying sunlight with a prism and some thermometers. He measured the temperature of each color and noticed something curious. There was a warm spot just beyond the red light where he couldn't see any color at all. He had discovered my invisible sibling, Infrared! A few decades later, in the 1860s, a brilliant scientist named James Clerk Maxwell used math to predict that I had a whole family of other invisible waves. He was like a detective who knew the clues pointed to something more. Then, in 1887, Heinrich Hertz proved he was right by finding my radio waves. And in 1895, another scientist named Wilhelm Röntgen accidentally discovered my X-ray waves while working in his lab. He was so surprised when he saw a picture of the bones in his own hand!
Today, my whole family helps you in so many ways, and you probably use us without even thinking about it. My long radio waves carry music and shows right to your homes. My microwaves are experts at wiggling water molecules to heat your food in a flash. My infrared waves are used in your TV remote to send a secret signal to change the channel. My visible light helps you see the beautiful world, from the green grass to the blue sky. And my powerful X-ray waves help doctors make sure you are healthy on the inside. I am a secret, powerful team, always working to help you connect, learn, and explore our amazing universe.
