Languages of the World

Do you hear that? A friendly 'woof,' a soft 'meow,' a happy giggle! I am in every sound you make to share how you feel. I am in a big 'hello!' to a friend and a quiet 'I love you' whispered at bedtime. I help you sing songs, tell stories, and ask for another cookie. I am all the wonderful, wiggly, warm words in the world. You can call me the Languages of the World!

My story began a very, very long time ago. Around 100,000 years ago, the first people wanted to talk to each other. They made sounds to say, 'Look, a berry!' or 'Be careful!'. As people moved all over the world, to sunny beaches and snowy mountains, their words changed and grew. It was like one song turning into thousands of new songs! Each group of people made their own special words. Then, much, much later, around 5,000 years ago in a place called Mesopotamia, people started drawing their words so they could remember them forever. That's called writing!

Today, there are more than 7,000 of me! Isn't that amazing? In Spanish, you can say 'hola.'. In French, you can say 'bonjour.'. In Swahili, you can say 'jambo.'. They all mean 'hello'! Every single language is beautiful and special. Learning new words is like making new friends all across the world. It’s a wonderful way to share your heart and listen to others share theirs, too.
