Languages of the World

I am the sound of a happy laugh and a whispered secret. I am in the songs you sing and the stories your family tells before bed. Before you could even talk, I was there in your gurgles and cries, helping you tell your grown-ups that you were hungry or sleepy. I am how you ask for a cookie, how you say 'I love you,' and how you shout 'hooray.' when you win a game. I am a magical, invisible thread that connects you to everyone you know. My story began a very long time ago, maybe 100,000 years ago, when the first modern humans gathered together. At first, I was just sounds and hand movements, helping people warn each other about big, scary mammoths or share where to find yummy berries. For thousands and thousands of years, I was only spoken or sung. But then, something amazing happened. Around 3,400 BCE, in a land called Mesopotamia, clever people called the Sumerians figured out how to write me down. They used special tools to press wedge-shaped marks onto clay tablets. This invention, called cuneiform, meant that stories and ideas could travel across time and be shared forever. From that moment on, I started to appear in many different written forms, like the beautiful hieroglyphs in Egypt and the alphabets you use today.

Today, I exist in over 7,000 different ways all over the globe. I can be Spanish, Mandarin, Swahili, English, or American Sign Language, which uses hands instead of voices. Each of my forms is a special way of seeing the world. When you learn a new word like 'gracias' for 'thank you' or 'konnichiwa' for 'hello,' you are opening a new door and making the world a friendlier place.
