Languages of the World

I start as a flicker of an idea inside your head—a funny thought, a sudden question, or a big feeling in your heart. How do you get it from your mind into someone else’s? That’s where I come in! I am the bridge between you and everyone else. I can be a whispered secret, a shouted warning, or a silly song you sing with friends. Before you could write me down, I was just sounds and gestures. A happy sound to share good news, a pointed finger to say, “Look!”. I help you tell your parents you’re hungry or that you love them. I am the magic that turns your thoughts into something you can share. I am Language, and I come in thousands of different, beautiful forms all over the world.

For a very, very long time, I only existed in the air. As early as 50,000 BCE, early modern humans used me to plan hunts, tell stories around the fire, and build the first communities. I was their most important tool for survival and friendship. But spoken words disappear as soon as you say them. Can you imagine trying to remember a long grocery list without writing it down? People needed a way to make me last. So, around 3200 BCE in a place called Mesopotamia, the clever Sumerians gave me a physical form. They used a reed to press wedge-shaped marks into wet clay tablets. This was one of the first writing systems, called cuneiform. For the first time, I could be saved for later! People used this new trick to keep track of important things like how much grain they had or to send messages to faraway cities.

Did you know that many of my forms are related, like a giant family? Think of it like a huge tree. A big, strong branch might be a language from long ago, like Latin, which was spoken by the ancient Romans. From that one branch, smaller branches grew, which became languages like Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese. They look and sound a little different, but they share the same roots! Scientists, called linguists, have even discovered that many of my forms spoken today in Europe and India might have come from one super-ancient great-great-grandparent language they call Proto-Indo-European, spoken thousands of years ago. I change and travel with people, picking up new words and creating new dialects wherever I go.

Sometimes, my older forms become a mystery. For over a thousand years, no one could read the beautiful picture-writing of ancient Egypt, called hieroglyphs. The secrets of the pharaohs were lost! But then, on July 15th, 1799, a special stone was found: the Rosetta Stone. It had the same message written in three scripts, including hieroglyphs and Ancient Greek, which scholars could read. A brilliant Frenchman named Jean-François Champollion studied it for years until, in 1822, he cracked the code! Suddenly, the ancient Egyptians could “speak” to us again through their writings. Today, I am still growing. You create new words for things like apps and video games.
