The story

The Day the Money Kite Fell

I want to tell you about a time, long ago, in the 1920s. It was like a giant, roaring party that lasted for years. People were so excited and everything felt new and sparkly. They bought shiny new cars that zoomed down the streets and listened to jazzy music on brand new radios. It was an age of invention and fun. Many people also bought tiny pieces of big companies, called stocks. They thought it was a wonderful game. They hoped the value of their stocks would climb higher and higher, like a colorful kite soaring in the wind. Everyone watched their kites go up, sure that they would reach the clouds and bring down riches. But what happens when a kite flies too high and too fast, and the string suddenly snaps?.

That's when I arrived. I am the Stock Market Crash of 1929. At first, I was just a little wobble, a tiny shiver in the wind. On a day called Black Thursday, October 24th, 1929, some people got nervous and started to sell their stocks. They wanted to pull their money kites down before the wind changed. Then, just a few days later, on Black Tuesday, October 29th, 1929, the wobble became a giant tumble. Suddenly, everyone wanted to sell their stocks all at once. It was like a game of musical chairs where the music suddenly stopped, and there were no chairs left for anyone. The value of all those stocks fell down, down, down. The money people thought they had vanished like a puff of smoke. President Herbert Hoover and everyone else were very worried. The party was over.

My arrival was very hard for people. It was the beginning of a tough time called the Great Depression, when many families struggled to buy food and keep their homes. It was a sad and scary time. But I also taught an important lesson that people would never forget. People learned that they needed to be much more careful with their money and create rules to make sure the stock market was safer for everyone. They created new laws to protect people's savings and to watch over the companies selling stocks. I was a sad and difficult event, but I remind people to build their dreams on a strong foundation, with care and smart rules, so that everyone has a better chance to be secure and happy.

About

The sudden and severe collapse of stock market prices in the United States in late October 1929 was a significant event that contributed to the onset of the Great Depression. However, it did not immediately signal its beginning. The Great Depression began after the stock market collapse in late October 1929, but the real trigger was widespread bank failures that started in 1930.
