My Super Eyes: The Story of the Microscope

When they looked through it, they gasped. A tiny bug on the table looked like a giant monster. They had discovered how to make things look much, much bigger. I was so excited to be born. I said, ‘I can show people a brand new world.’ They realized that by sliding the tube, they could make the tiny things look even clearer. It was like magic. As time went on, people made me better and better, with stronger lenses that could see even smaller things. In the year 1665, a scientist in England named Robert Hooke used me to look at a thin slice of cork from a tree. He saw that it was made of thousands of tiny, empty boxes. He called them ‘cells,’ and it was the first time anyone had seen the building blocks of a plant. Then, a man named Antonie van Leeuwenhoek got really curious. In the 1670s, he built his own special versions of me. He looked at everything, from the gunk on his teeth to drops of pond water. He was amazed to see tiny creatures wiggling and swimming around. He called them ‘animalcules,’ which we now call bacteria. It was like discovering a tiny zoo that had been invisible forever. I was so proud to show him this secret world of life. People were shocked and amazed. They had no idea that so much life existed in places they thought were empty. It was a huge discovery. I helped people understand that even things you can't see can be alive and moving. This changed science forever because now scientists had a new world to explore.
