Just want La Scala?
Imagine you are sitting in a cozy, red velvet seat. The air around you is quiet but filled with excitement, waiting for a story to begin. In front of you is a giant stage, hidden behind a grand, sweeping curtain. If you look up, you’ll see a huge, sparkling chandelier hanging like a diamond star from the ceiling. I am La Scala, a world-famous opera house in the beautiful city of Milan, Italy. I am a special place where stories are not just told, but sung.
My story begins a long, long time ago. Another theater once stood right where I am now, but sadly, it burned down in a fire on February 25th, 1776. The people of Milan were heartbroken. A kind and powerful empress named Maria Theresa wanted them to have a new, even more wonderful place for music. She asked a clever architect named Giuseppe Piermarini to build me. He chose a special spot where a church called Santa Maria alla Scala used to be, and that’s how I got my beautiful name. For two years, builders worked hard, and finally, my doors swung open for the very first time on August 3rd, 1778. Everyone who came inside was amazed. They loved my six levels of fancy boxes where families could sit and watch the shows together.
For many years, the most incredible music has filled my halls. I became good friends with famous composers like Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini. Their amazing operas, full of adventure and big feelings, were performed on my stage for the very first time. But my life wasn't always easy. During a big conflict called World War II, a bomb hit me in August of 1943, and I was badly hurt. The people of Milan were very sad to see me broken, but they worked together with great determination to rebuild me. They knew that music and art bring people hope, especially in hard times. I opened my doors again, stronger and more beautiful than ever, on May 11th, 1946, with a joyful concert that filled every corner with happiness.
