The story

Isaac Peral

Hello! My name is Isaac Peral, and I would like to tell you my story. I was born in the beautiful port city of Cartagena, Spain, on June 1st, 1851. My father was a sailor in the Spanish Navy, and growing up so close to the sea, I was fascinated by ships and the great blue ocean. I didn't just love watching the waves; I was also curious about how everything worked. I spent my time reading books about science, mathematics, and geography. This love for the sea and for science would guide my entire life and lead me to dream of a boat that could travel not just on the water, but under it.

My dream of a life at sea began early. In 1865, when I was only 14 years old, I joined the Naval Military School, eager to learn and serve my country. As a naval officer, my duties took me around the world, to places like Cuba and the Philippines. But I was more than just a sailor; I was an inventor at heart. During my time in the navy, I was always thinking of ways to use science to improve our ships and protect our sailors. In 1882, I worked on a plan for an electrically powered warship and even helped create a warning system to detect incoming torpedoes. My mind was always buzzing with ideas, connecting my knowledge of engineering with the needs of the navy.

In 1885, a tense situation arose between Spain and Germany over some small islands. This conflict made me think deeply about how we could defend our country's coastline without risking giant ships and the lives of many sailors. It was then that the idea bubbling in my mind became a clear plan. I sat down and wrote a paper I called my 'Project for a Torpedo Submarine.' I imagined a vessel that could move silently underwater, powered by electricity, and defend our harbors without being seen. I presented my idea to the Minister of the Navy. It was a bold and futuristic concept, and I knew it would be a challenge, but I believed it could change naval warfare forever.

To my great joy, the Spanish government approved my project in 1886. It was time to turn my dream into a real, working machine. For two years, my team and I worked tirelessly to build my submarine, which had a strong steel hull shaped like a cigar. It was not powered by steam like other ships, but by electricity from powerful batteries I designed. This meant it could run quietly without needing air for an engine. I also included some special inventions: an 'optical tube,' which you would now call a periscope, to see above the water while submerged; a device to measure our depth precisely; and, most importantly, a system to launch torpedoes while underwater. On September 8th, 1888, my submarine, named the 'Peral,' was launched into the water in the bay of Cádiz. It was one of the proudest days of my life.

The next two years, from 1889 to 1890, were filled with tests to prove what my submarine could do. The results were a huge success. We sailed underwater for over an hour, navigated perfectly, and even performed a mock attack, firing a torpedo while completely submerged—something no one had ever reliably done before. The public was thrilled, and I felt we were on the verge of a great new era for the Spanish Navy. However, not everyone shared my vision. Some powerful people in the government were skeptical, and despite all our proven successes, they decided to cancel the project in 1890. It was a heartbreaking disappointment for me and my crew. I felt my country was missing a great opportunity.

After leaving the navy in 1891, I used my knowledge of electricity to start new businesses and bring electric lighting to several cities in Spain. I never stopped being an inventor. Sadly, my life was cut short by an illness, and my life came to an end in Berlin on May 22nd, 1895. I lived to be 43 years old. Though my submarine was never put into service by the navy of my time, my work was not forgotten. I am remembered as a pioneer who proved that an electric-powered submarine could be a powerful military tool. My ideas were ahead of their time and helped inspire the future of underwater navigation. Today, you can visit my original submarine, which stands proudly in a museum in my hometown of Cartagena, a monument to a dream that sailed beneath the waves.
