The Princess and the Pea – Danish

The Princess and the Pea – Danish is a tiny, irresistible classic by Hans Christian Andersen. It reads fast and lands with a cheeky smile. Young listeners love the visual jokes and the odd museum pea.

About The Princess and the Pea – Danish

Andersen first published the tale on May 8, 1835, in Copenhagen by C.A. Reitzel as part of the booklet “Eventyr, fortalte for Børn. Første Samling. Første Hefte.” The original Danish title was Prindsessen paa Ærten, but modern Danish spelling is Prinsessen på ærten due to orthographic reforms in 1948, as noted in Den Danske Ordbog. Andersen wrote original literary fairy tales. He did not simply retell older folk tales. The original tale comprises 382 words and 28 sentences, with an average of 13.64 words per sentence, showcasing its brevity and charm.

In Andersen’s version a prince longs for a real princess. One stormy night, a soaked girl appears at the castle gate. A queen tests her by hiding a pea under a huge pile of bedding. Remarkably, the girl feels the pea. The prince knows he has found his match. They marry, and, as a playful afterthought, Andersen says the pea was kept in a museum for visitors to see. This story is indexed as Aarne–Thompson–Uther tale type ATU 704 — “The Princess (on the) Pea”, situating it within a broader context of fairy tales.

Why kids love The Princess and the Pea – Danish

The story is short, vivid, and very visual. For example, the storm, the mountain of mattresses, and the tiny pea make children giggle. The odd detail about twenty mattresses and twenty eider-down beds adds comic charm. Also, Andersen’s sly satire of snobbery feels safe and clever for young ears.

The tale shows that true worth can hide in small places. It asks gentle questions about who counts as a princess. Children sense the humor and the heart at the same time.
