At Storypie, we believe that education should do more than help students pass the next test—it should help them build knowledge that lasts a lifetime. That’s why improving learning outcomes isn’t just one of our goals; it’s at the heart of our mission. Every feature, lesson, and activity is designed with one question in mind: How can we help students learn more effectively? The answer lies in decades of research from cognitive science.
What Is The Science Of Learning?
The science of learning brings together research from cognitive psychology, educational psychology, and neuroscience to understand how people learn, remember, and apply information over time.
Researchers have consistently found that some of the most popular study habits—such as rereading notes, highlighting textbooks, or cramming the night before an exam—are often less effective for long-term learning than strategies that require students to actively engage with the material.
Some of the most well-supported strategies include:
- Retrieval Practice: Actively recalling information from memory without looking at notes or other resources.
- Spacing: Studying material over multiple sessions instead of all at once.
- Pretesting: Attempting to answer questions before learning new content, even if the answers are unknown.
- Interleaving: Mixing different topics or skills during practice instead of studying one topic in isolation.
Each of these strategies works through different cognitive mechanisms (if interested, check this website for more), but they share one important characteristic: they make learning active rather than passive. Instead of simply reviewing information, students are challenged to retrieve, analyze, compare, and apply what they know (and be aware of what they don’t). This deeper level of engagement strengthens memory and leads to better long-term retention. In other words, students are not just studying for the next quiz—they are building knowledge they can carry into future classes, everyday life, and their careers.
Why Does Storypie Use These Strategies?
Although decades of research support these evidence-based learning techniques, many students rarely use them.
Studies investigating college students’ study habits suggest that students often report two major barriers: 1) they are unwilling to change their habits (it costs them time), and 2) they do not know how to implement them effectively or feel anxious about using them (see David et al., 2024 and Rea et al., 2022 for more information).
Storypie was built to bridge this gap. Rather than expecting students or teachers to redesign their own study routines, we embed research-backed learning principles directly into the platform. Our goal is to expose students to these strategies early in their educational journey so they naturally develop stronger learning habits that extend beyond Storypie.
How Storypie Brings Learning Science to Life
The best learning strategies should not require extra work from teachers, parents, or students. That’s why Storypie seamlessly integrates evidence-based practices throughout our lessons, curriculum design, and worksheets. These strategies are woven into the learning experience itself, making them easy to use without requiring additional planning or expertise. Beyond our instructional materials, we also provide resources and training that help educators and families understand the science behind effective learning and apply these techniques in other educational settings.
Our mission extends beyond our platform—we want to empower better learning everywhere.
Looking Ahead
The science of learning is constantly evolving, and so is Storypie.
While the strategies we use are supported by a robust body of research, we are equally committed to evaluating and improving our own implementation. Our team is actively seeking collaborations with researchers to validate the learning outcomes associated with our platform while conducting ongoing studies with users to refine and enhance their experience. By combining educational innovation with scientific evidence, we hope to create learning experiences that are not only engaging but also genuinely effective.
Because at Storypie, we believe every student deserves access to learning that works.
